YVES HÄNGGI
Switzerland
Born in 1966, Yves Hänggi is a painter and illustrator, graduate of the Cantonal School of Visual Arts in Biel (Switzerland). His artistic universe is nourished by underground drawing, alternative comics, free figuration, singular art and art brut, influences that he mixes through various formats, supports and techniques (acrylic, ink, chalk, collage, screen printing). His work has been exhibited in Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, USA, Turkey, Madagascar, and has been published by Swiss and foreign publishers. He has also been awarded various artistic residencies in Paris (Cité internationale des arts), Berlin, Lisbon and Antananarivo. He lives and works in Porrentruy (Switzerland). Inspired by the plural world around him and by mass culture, Yves Hänggi seek to explore certain subterranean facets of the human being in order to bring out and exaggerate its multiple identities. To this end, he plays with the notions of accumulation, multiplication, interlacing, overlapping or even overexposure, echoing the entanglement and the labyrinthine meanders of our current society. With his own artistic and metaphorical vocabulary, he weave a network of symbolic and allegorical figures, a jungle of standardized, dehumanized, submissive or robotized characters, interwoven into a frantic and overpopulated saraband.
