Interview with Stephen Mackey

q)Something about you.what you want...
a)TO GET ON WITH THINGS.
q) What are your main goals when you create?
a)TO MAKE SOMETHING PERFECT & THAT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING I'VE FOUND RATHER THAN SOMETHING I EXECUTED.
q) Do you rule by any tendency in your creative work, or you only follow what comes in your mind?
a)I MAKE EVERYTHING UP AS I GO ALONG, COMPOSITION HAS TO INSIST UPON ITSELF. I LIKE RANDOMNESS.
q)How has the internet and your website helped you spread your artwork to a wider audience?
a)IT'S QUITE INCREDIBLE. WHAT I APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT IT IS THAT I CAN CONTINUE WORKING IN SUCH A HERMETIC FASHION WITHOUT CONCERN FOR PILES OF UNSEEN PAINTINGS ACCUMULATING IN THE CORNER OF A ROOM.
q)How do you define your style and how would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?
a)DENSELY PAINTED & HIGHLY MANNERED.

q)What materials do you use to realize your creations?
a)UNDILUTED WATERCOLOURS, ACRYLIC BODY COLOUR, WOOD VARNISH & QUICK-DRYING OIL COLOUR.

q) Do you draw influences from a wide range of artists, musicians, books.?
a)INEVITABLY, ALTHOUGH SOME INFLUENCES ARE DRAWN CONSCIOUSLY & IN BROAD DAYLIGHT SUCH AS THE CI9TH FRENCH PAINTER INGRES.
q)Name 3 things you couldn't create without?
a)COFFEE, MUSIC & 2 X 150W LIGHT BULBS.
q) Where have you show your art.?
a)LONDON, EDINBURGH & LIVERPOOL, BUT I HAVEN'T EXHIBITED ANYTHING BUT COMMERCIAL ART IN OVER TEN YEARS.

q) What haven't you done yet that you definitely want to try someday?
a)I WOULD HAVE SAID ANIMATION BUT I'VE BEEN DOING IT NOW FOR THE PAST SIX WEEKS (IN WHICH TIME I'VE AMASSED AN EPIC 35 SECONDS OF iMOVIE).
q) How important is self-promotion for an artist nowadays?
a)PROBABLY ESSENTIAL, BUT I FIND IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. THAT'S WHY I DO COMMERCIAL WORK TO PAY THE BILLS.
q) Would you say that your work consciously reflects characters and situations found within your daily life?
a)NOT CONSCIOUSLY, NO
q) Favourite book?
a)A FACSIMILE COPY I HAVE OF BLAKE'S MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN & HELL

q) Designers/Artists you admire?

Thanks for interviewing him, it's virtually impossible to find any information on Stephen - even on the internet!
